Where Is The Border?

A couple of other interesting things happened at the border, whereever it is. A discussion developed with regard to the actual location of the border and the group, which was like herding cats on occasion, split into two camps. Mind you, there was no hostility or anything of the kind, but one group believed the border was right at the sign and the change in the types of pavement used in Nebraska and Colorado, while the other group of three wanted to rely on science to determine the actual location of the border. Erika, the Head Kitten Wrangler, thought of the GPS in Rex's BugWing and suggested using that to determine the precise location. Joey joined that group with his skateboard, confident his elders knew what they were talking about, and we headed west, GPS in hand, until we were standing on the line. It was important to know the precise location since Joey wanted to do an "Ollie" across the border.

Rex had a big piece of chalk and drew a line across the highway, being careful to avoid all the Corvettes headed west. Then, so it would show in the photograph he wanted to do of Joey doing the "Ollie," he started writing the names of the States on each side of the line. In huge letters Rex wrote K.....A.....N.....S.....A.....

At that point, Erika snapped him back into reality from Purple Bananaland by yelling at him that we were in Nebraska on that side of the line, and not in Kansas! K.....A.....N.....S.....A..... was scratched out, Nebraska was scrawled on the road, and Joey did his "Ollie." The other group never actually did cross into Colorado; they just think they did and we allowed them to continue thinking that way since we had science on our side and the States of Nebraska and Colorado are actually mistaken with regard to the placement of the border sign. Colorado doesn't know it, but they've actually paved part of Route 6 in Nebraska, saving them a significant amount of money, I'm sure.

After festivities ended at the border (whereever it is), we headed back east to eat and get some sleep before parting ways the next day. The group that made it from border-to-border did a photo under a Route 6 sign we found not far back into Nebraska (for the three of us who actually left Nebraska and crossed the border, that is). While we sat in a restaurant and ate we signed the tour books Don gave to us at the beginning of the tour, we exchanged e-mail addresses and phone numbers if we didn't have them already, and we started planning to do it again next year since it was so much fun. Join us anywhere along the Route 6 Art Car Tour; August 19 - 27, 2006. The schedule of events is found here.
